Investigation of biomass alkali release in a dual circulating fluidized bed chemical looping combustion system

Chemical looping combustion (CLC) of biomass is a promising technology for power generation with integrated carbon capture. In CLC, alkali content poses potential issues bed agglomeration, as well heat exchanger fouling and corrosion. The fate alkalis was investigated in dual-interconnected circulating fluidized CLC system. Experiments were conducted oxygen carrier aided (OCAC) modes. Ilmenite braunite carriers three fuels (wood pellets, wood char, straw pellets) tested. Flue gas emissions the air reactor (AR) fuel (FR) measured surface ionization detector (SID). Results showed that operation yields gas-phase are up to 15 times higher than comparable OCAC operation. analysis concluded increased arise from steam atmosphere FR, whereby accelerates decomposition compounds biomass. Retention condensed phase found be >97% ilmenite >92% Up 60–80% retention attributed ash formation. residual absorption by carriers. Absorption likely occurred mainly through formation manganates silicates braunite, silicates, aluminosilicates, manganates, titanates ilmenite. Gas-phase AR, although less occur due unconverted carried over FR AR.
